The exhibition will show more than fifty works by modern and 20th century Moscow artists. The project refers to various epochs and identities but shows, nevertheless, the link between generations: paintings in the display are united by the affinity of artistic techniques typical of Moscow school of painting. The subject of paintings by Moscow artists is their city. The exhibition shows the image of fading Moscow, its manners, characters and space.

We often talk about Moscow. We live in this city. We see it every day. We are sorry about Moscow. Cities change their image during the time of a human life and every change is sad, as it is the way for the present to turn into the past. We inherited a city of the 20th century: a shiny, ironic, wise, devastated, revived, starving, sovereign, communal Moscow.

Our exhibition is yet another list of Muscovites: Ilya Mashkov and Pyotr Konchalovsky, Aristarkh Lentulov and Robert Falk, Konstantin Istomin, Aleksandr Drevin, Samuil Adlivankin and Rostislav Barto, Aleksandr Labas and Nikolai Romadin, as well as Anatoly Zverev and Dmitry Krasnopevtsev, Mikhail Roginsky, Natalia Nesterova, Vadimir Weisberg, Boris Kasatkin and many others. Each one of those is related to the Moscow school of painting — refinedly coloristic, European, subtle and very precise.

Pyotr Konchalovsky forms his 1920s portrait of an unknown Moscow beauty as a blazing harmony of red and orange shades. Robert Falk draws his Moscow actress Azarkh-Granovskaya as a Renaissance duchess, ironically trying on a mask of a ceremonial painter. Evgeny Oks compositionally unites pale winter apples, a spacious window sill and glassware in his still-life of 1951. Early Dmitry Krasnopevtsev gives backyards of a Moscow shop a romantic appearance of a Paris alleyway of musketeers times. Precision of color creates an illusion of the truth of life: the play of the red and the green in a landscape by Boris Kasatkin takes us to the 80s, to a hot summer on Pirogovka street.

A major chord in “Moscow is behind us” exhibition is “Pechatnikov pathway”, the famous theatricalized landscape by Natalia Nesterova that depicts the House with caryatids recently rescued by enthusiasts from the destruction.
