The latest spring exhibition at In artibus Foundation presents 120 works by Moscow painter Boris Kasatkin. For the artist, who was born in 1944, this is an anniversary year.
Boris Kasatkin’s paintings play a notable role in the collection of Inna Bazhenova. His work is an important part of her complex collection, which brings together contemporary artists and old masters, European modernists and the Moscow painting school, and international and Russian classical art practices.
The Moscow artist considers himself heir to the traditions of European colourism, following on from the “museum masters,” the Cezannists of the Jack of Diamonds group and, of course, Vladimir Weisberg, who Kasatkin continues to call his teacher.
The collector met the artist in 2009, when Inna Bazhenova, who was interested in the work of Vladimir Weisberg, helped publish E. Khlopina’s monograph In Love with Classical Art. The Work of V.G. Weisberg in the Tradition of European Colourism. The idea for that book came from Boris Kasatkin, and he was both initiator and consultant to the author. Inna then got to know the artist’s work and began to acquire his paintings. Today this “collection within a collection” has grown to 150 works.
In 2011 the book Paintings by Boris Kasatkin in the Collection of Inna Bazhenova was published. It included a detailed biography, an analysis of the work and the artist’s own texts.
In 2015 In artibus Foundation organised a solo exhibition by Boris Kasatkin that toured to the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Volgograd Museum of Fine Arts, Vologda Regional Picture Gallery, Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts and Perm State Art Gallery.
The exhibition is on show until 30 June.

In artibus Foundation is a non-commercial organisation that supports research in the field of classical art. The foundation’s main areas of work are organising exhibitions together with museums, cultural foundations and private collections in Russia and abroad, publishing, organising and running academic conferences and supporting international cultural initiatives. The exhibition space opened in 2014.
